Do You Know the Radon Levels in Your Childs School

  A nationwide survey of radon levels in schools estimates that nearly one in five has at least one schoolroom with a short-term radon level above the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L.

Testing is the only way to know if high levels of radon exist in your school. All public schools in Maine were mandated to test in the 1980’s by the Department of Education.  This was lifted in the 1990’s and the Radon testing is no longer valid that the state has on file.  Currently there is no mandate to test schools in Maine.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium which is found in soil and rock all over the United States. Radon travels through soil and enters buildings through cracks and other holes in the foundation.

Radon is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Therefore, the only way to know whether an elevated level of radon is present in any room of a school is to test.

EPA’s investigations of radon in schools were initiated in 1988 with a study ofschools in Fairfax County, Virginia. As the result of a nationwide survey of radon levels in schools, it is estimated that nearly one in five U.S. schools have at least one ground contact room with short-term radon levels above 4 pCi/L; the level at which the EPA suggests mitigation.

It is recommended that all schools nationwide be tested for radon. EPA estimates that more than 70,000 schoolrooms in use today have high short-term radon levels.
